A word descrambler solves the specific puzzle where you know the letters are a single scrambled word and you want that word back. Newspaper jumble puzzles, daily word games and quiz rounds all work this way: "tcanrsleb" is "scrambled", and there is exactly one intended answer.

Because the target is one word rather than a list of options, the pattern filters matter more here than anywhere else on the site. If you already know the third letter is "r" or that it ends in "-ed", saying so usually collapses hundreds of candidates down to one.

This is the exact mechanic behind the newspaper puzzle Jumble, created in 1954 and still running in hundreds of papers today: four scrambled words, then circled letters from each spell out the answer to a final visual pun.

Use the descrambler when the letters are a single hidden word. If you are holding game tiles and want every playable option rather than one answer, use the word unscrambler.

How to use it

  1. Enter the scrambled letters exactly as given.
  2. Add any letters you already know using the “starts with” and “ends with” filters.
  3. If nothing matches, check for a misread letter - puzzle typography confuses rn with m and l with I constantly.

Which tool do you need?

All four tools run the same engine over the same dictionary. They differ in what they assume you want back.

Common questions

It returns several words. Which is the answer?

Puzzle setters usually intend the longest or most common option. If two remain, the surrounding clue or the puzzle theme almost always decides it.

It returns nothing at all.

Either a letter was misread, or the answer is a proper noun. Names are deliberately excluded from these dictionaries because they would flood ordinary results.
