A name anagram generator rearranges the letters of a personal name into other words. It is the oldest recreational use of anagrams there is: writers have built pen names this way for centuries, and the puzzle tradition of hiding a name inside an innocuous phrase is older still.

Names behave differently from ordinary words, which is why this has its own page. They are usually two or three parts, they carry letter distributions ordinary vocabulary does not - doubled consonants, trailing y, unusual vowel runs - and the interesting output is often a phrase rather than a single word.

Voltaire is one of the best-documented cases: most historians read it as an anagram of a Latinised spelling of the author's birth name, Arouet, adopted as a deliberate act of reinvention rather than a simple stage name.

Use this when your input is a name and you want something readable out of it. For an ordinary dictionary word, the anagram generator gives cleaner results.

How to use it

  1. Enter the full name. Capitals, spaces and punctuation are ignored.
  2. Try each name part alone as well - a full name often has no clean rearrangement while a first name has several.
  3. Drop a letter deliberately if nothing works. Near-anagrams read better than forced exact ones.

Which tool do you need?

All four tools run the same engine over the same dictionary. They differ in what they assume you want back.

Common questions

Why does my full name return nothing?

A full name is usually twelve or more letters, and the chance that a single dictionary word uses exactly that multiset is very small. Try the parts separately.

Are names themselves in the dictionary?

No. These wordlists deliberately exclude proper nouns, so results are ordinary words rearranged from your name, not other names.
