A word unscrambler takes a jumble of letters and finds every real word you can build from them - including words shorter than the letters you entered. Give it "rasteel" and you get "stealer" and "elaters", but also "tesla", "eater", "rest", "ale" and "at".

That subset behaviour is what makes it the tool for word games. A rack of seven tiles rarely plays as all seven; what you actually need to know is the best word available at any length, which is why results are sorted longest-first and can be re-sorted by score.

Competitive tile-game tournaments have run on exactly this kind of rack-management skill since the modern World Championship series began in the early 1990s - finding the highest-scoring word from a partial rack, not just the longest one.

Use the unscrambler when you have loose letters and want every option. If you specifically need words that use every single letter, switch on “use every letter”, or use the anagram generator instead.

How to use it

  1. Enter your letters. Order does not matter.
  2. Add ? for each blank or wildcard tile you hold.
  3. Sort by score to find the highest-value play, or filter by starting and ending letters to fit a board.

Which tool do you need?

All four tools run the same engine over the same dictionary. They differ in what they assume you want back.

Common questions

Does it include short words?

Yes - everything from two letters upwards, unless you set a minimum length. Short words are often the ones that actually fit on a crowded board.

How do blanks work?

Each ? stands in for any single letter and scores zero, which is exactly how a blank tile behaves in most letter-tile games.
